Few people know that the original name of Valencia comes from Latin Valentia Edetanorum<\/em>, which means \u201ccourage\u201d or \u201cbravery\u201d. The city was founded in 138 BC<\/strong>. by veteran Roman soldiers, in a fertile area next to the river Turia. These Roman roots are still present in its urban layout and in some of the archaeological remains visible today in the Almoina Archaeological Centre<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

During the Spanish Civil War<\/strong>, Between 1936 and 1937, Valencia was the provisional capital of the country. Madrid was under constant threat and the city offered greater security. Ministerial offices and diplomatic headquarters were set up here, making Valencia one of the most active political and cultural centres of the time.<\/p>\n

Today, some of these buildings are still in use, such as the North Station or the Town Hall.<\/p>\n

The Turia Garden was not always a park. The river Turia used to flow through it, but it was diverted after a great flood in 1957. Every Thursday at noon, in front of the Cathedral's Apostle's door, a meeting takes place the Water Tribunal<\/strong>. This institution, recognised by UNESCO, has been functioning for more than 1,000 years to resolve irrigation disputes between farmers.<\/p>\n
