The first total eclipse visible from Spain in over a century
The 12 August 2026, Valencia will become one of the best places in the world to witness a total solar eclipse, the first to be visible from the Iberian Peninsula for over a hundred years. At sunset, the Moon will completely cover the Sun and the sky will darken for around a minute – a phenomenon that will not occur again in the Valencian Community until the year 2180.
The eclipse will begin at around 19:38, with the totality phase occurring between 8.32 pm and 8.33 pm, and will continue until around 9.26 pm. As it takes place when the sun is very low on the horizon, the key to enjoying it properly is to choose a spot with clear horizon to the west, far from buildings and crowds.
Why watch the eclipse outside the city?
Valencia’s beaches and rooftops will be packed with people on that day, so the experience varies greatly depending on where you are:
- A open horizon Heading west is essential if you don’t want to miss a single moment of the phenomenon.
- As the ambient light fades completely, the temperature drops slightly and even the behaviour of birds and insects changes, as if night were falling. It is an experience that is enjoyed much more in a natural, peaceful setting.
- The city’s most popular spots will be packed, so heading out to the Valencian Community is the best way to enjoy it at your own pace and in peace.
- We strongly recommend the use of eyewear approved to ISO 12312-2 during all the different phases; never use ordinary sunglasses or homemade filters.
