Europe’s longest underground river, 60 km from Valencia
Located in La Vall d’Uixó (Castellón), the Cuevas de San José – or Coves de Sant Josep in Valencian – are home to the the longest navigable underground river in the whole of Europe. Declared Natural Monument of the Valencian Community, are one of the Mediterranean’s most stunning natural treasures and a must-do day trip if you’re in Valencia.
Formed millions of years ago by the action of water on limestone, their passages stretch for kilometres beneath the Mount Picaio. The artificial light reveals stalactites, stalagmites and calcite columns of extraordinary beauty, all reflected in crystal-clear, turquoise-hued waters.
Why visit the San José Caves?
The experience central is only in Europe: hop aboard a small boat and sail literally beneath the mountain. There’s nowhere else on the continent where you can do that. Added to that are:
- The interior remains at 20°C all year round, making it the perfect escape from the Mediterranean heat in summer.
- Geological formations have been developing over millions of years: every tunnel is different.
- A official local guide tells the geological history and legends of the area.
- The cave is just 60 km from the centre of Valencia, making it perfect for a day trip.
