Discover Dénia Castle, its old town by the sea and a 50,000-year-old prehistoric cave that almost nobody knows about.

Highlights

Description

Discover Dénia, one of the most vibrant towns on the Costa Blanca, on a day trip from Valencia that combines history, the beach and a prehistoric secret known to very few tourists. Just over an hour from Valencia, this Mediterranean gem brings together everything that makes Spain’s Levante region so special: a castle overlooking the sea, a colourful old town, renowned cuisine and a millennia-old cave hidden inland.

The castle and the old town of Dénia

Start the day with a guided tour of Dénia’s historic centre, with its colourful houses and narrow streets full of character. Make your way up to the castle, perched on a promontory with panoramic views of the Mediterranean coast; on clear days, you can even make out the silhouette of Ibiza on the horizon. Dénia is known for its lively marina with direct connections to the Balearic Islands and for its award-winning cuisine, particularly its red prawns and traditional rice dishes.

The Cueva de las Calaveras: a 50,000-year-old archaeological site

What really sets this excursion apart from similar ones is the included visit to the Cueva de las Calaveras cave in Benidoleig, just a few minutes from Dénia. This cave, carved out of limestone dating back more than 130 million years, is home to one of the most important archaeological sites in the Valencian Community: human and prehistoric animal remains (hyenas, bears, rhinoceroses) which prove that the cave was inhabited over 50,000 years ago. Its name derives from the discovery, in 1768, of a dozen human skulls inside the cave, which gave rise to a popular legend about a Moorish treasure hidden following the expulsion of the Muslims from Spain. You’ll explore its galleries, which reach heights of up to 20 metres, amongst stalactites, stalagmites and a small underground lake, the Toll Blau.
